Patrols

Our surf lifesavers patrol the South Melbourne Beach on weekends and public holidays from the last weekend in November to ANZAC Day, aiming to provide a safe and enjoyable beach experience for everyone. Patrols typically run from midday to 5pm, extended to 6pm during peak season in January and February.

Each of our patrols is led by a Patrol Captain, a senior and experienced lifesaver selected for outstanding performance and leadership. In addition to our lifesavers all holding a Surf Life Saving Australia Bronze Medallion (or a Surf Rescue Certificate), our patrol teams include surf lifesavers qualified in the driving and crewing of inflatable rescue boats (IRBs), advanced resuscitation techniques and beach management.

Our lifesavers perform numerous rescues each season and attend to dozens of first aid cases.
